Dynex secures contract with Welsh Government's Hydrogen Production Project

Hydrogen Power Export Route for Wind (HyPER Wind)

Dynex acknowledge funding from Welsh Government for Hydrogen Production Feasibility Study

Dynex Semiconductor Ltd would like to extend their gratitude towards the Welsh Government for the opportunity to present our proposal for the HyPER Wind Hydrogen Business Research & Innovation for Decarbonisation Project (HyBRID).

We are thrilled to have successfully won a funded feasibility study to develop a power converter dedicated to wind powered Hydrogen production. The purpose would be to eliminate the additional power electronics needed to connect the wind turbine to the national grid and improve the cost of producing Green Hydrogen.

The Welsh Government launched its HyBRID Small Business Research Initiative aimed at developing innovative solutions to address a number of the objectives of the Wales Hydrogen Pathway, and to accelerate the deployment of green hydrogen across the Welsh economy. This will ensure that Wales plays a key role in supporting the UK target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

HyPER Wind aims to provide an optimised converter solution to enable more efficient and flexible production of green hydrogen from offshore wind. The technological aspects of the project, i.e. the optimised power converter, will rely on the comprehensive technical expertise and experience of Dynex and the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult.

Why Dynex are well placed to support the HyPER hydrogen production project?

  • Manufacturers of Semiconductors and Heatsink assemblies for high power applications and have provided electronics for over 60 years.
  • We have two parallel 6-inch wafer lines producing IGBT modules, bipolar thyristors and diode devices. The lines have a combined capacity of 80,000 wafers per year, processing from base silicon wafer through to packaging.
  • Dedicated R&D centre developing the next generation of silicon and wide bandgap semiconductors, as well as state of the art packaging to enable their operation.
  • Our engineers are engaged in providing tailored power assemblies for hydro dam excitation, power factor correction and rail traction.
  • Part of several hydrogen production projects powered from grid distribution.
  • Facilities are able to provide a turnkey solution, which means we can work to construct devices and set up trials
  • We already provide 50Hz rectifiers up to 3MW in power for excitation systems in hydro dams.

Hydrogen production will play a large part in the future of clean energy, and 20% of the gas mixture used in homes for heating and cooking will be Hydrogen. This project gives Dynex the opportunity to demonstrate its design capability for power electronics and device capability.
