In order to maximise the semiconductor performance in an assembly, the type of heatsink, transient conditions, overloads, ambient temperature, surface finish (e.g. black anodised) and the method of cooling (air, liquid or phase change) is considered.

What types of applications are the 3-phase rectifies used in ?

A high-power thyristor 3-phase bridge as supplied by Dynex Power Assemblies team can be used anywhere that requires conversion of large AC power to controllable DC (rectifier mode) or DC back to AC (inverter mode). The most common users are steel/aluminium industries, railways, HVDC stations, and heavy industrial motor drives.

Heavy Industry (DC Power Supply Needs)

  • Steel Plants – for electric arc furnaces (EAFs), ladle furnaces, and rolling mills (where high-power DC required).
  • Aluminium Smelters  – use large DC rectifiers for electrolytic reduction processes. 
  • Electrochemical Plants - copper refining, chlorine production - where large DC currents needed.

Types of applications where AC Switch assemblies are used?

A high-power AC switch is used anywhere that needs fast, reliable, and repeated switching of very large AC currents. These are commonly used in utilities (for grid stability), heavy industries, renewable operators, railways, and advanced research facilities. 

Electric Utilities and Grid Operators

  • Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices (like SVCs and STATCOMs) use thyristor switches to connect/disconnect capacitors or reactors.
  • HVAC transmission systems – to rapidly switch compensation banks for voltage control.
