Dynex Advances Pulse Power Capability with High-Performance Thyristors and Integrated Assemblies

Deliver precise, high-energy switching in the most demanding applications.

Pulse Power Thyristors and Assemblies

Dynex Semiconductor continues to strengthen its position in advanced pulsed power systems with a comprehensive offering of pulse power thyristor devices and fully engineered pulsed power assemblies, designed to deliver precise, high-energy switching in the most demanding applications.

At the heart of this capability is Dynex’s range of pulse power thyristors, engineered specifically for extreme high-current, high-energy discharge events with very fast current rise. These devices are optimised for applications where conventional switching technologies reach their limits, enabling reliable operation in systems requiring controlled, repeatable energy delivery.

Enabling High-Energy Pulse Applications

Dynex pulse power thyristors are designed to operate in environments where peak current, di/dt capability, and robustness are critical performance parameters. With capabilities typically exceeding 2 kA/µs and in some cases over 20 kA/µs, the devices support rapid current rise without localised thermal failure.

Additional features such as low on-state losses, high surge current capability, strong dV/dt performance, and long operational life ensure efficient energy transfer and reliability in repetitive pulsed systems.

Available across voltage ranges from 3.3 kV to 8.3 kV, and in both symmetric and asymmetric configurations, these thyristors can be deployed as standalone devices or integrated into higher-power stacks.

Typical applications include:

  • Fusion research systems, including tokamaks
  • Particle accelerators
  • Magnetic pulse welding and metal forming
  • Plasma and drilling technologies
  • Defence and specialist pulsed systems
  • Medical applications such as pulsed X-ray and radiation equipment

In these environments, the thyristor acts as a controlled discharge switch, enabling precise release of stored energy from capacitors or pulse forming networks.

From Components to Complete Pulsed Power Systems

Building on its device expertise, Dynex also offers pulsed power assemblies, providing customers with fully engineered solutions tailored to specific application requirements.

These assemblies are designed to connect energy storage systems to low-inductance loads, provide protection through crowbar circuits, and replace legacy switching technologies such as thyratrons and ignitrons.

Compared to traditional gas-based or mechanical switching solutions, semiconductor-based assemblies offer several key advantages:

  • Improved reliability and operational lifetime
  • Higher repetition rates and increased number of operations
  • Enhanced waveform shaping and pulse control
  • Capability to handle higher current pulses

Dynex’s pulsed power assemblies combine optimised semiconductor selection with deep expertise in mechanical, electrical, and thermal design, ensuring reliable performance under extreme electrical stress.

Supporting the Transition to Solid-State Pulse Power

The shift from legacy switching technologies to solid-state solutions is accelerating across industries such as fusion energy, industrial processing, and defence systems. Dynex’s integrated approach spanning device design, stack integration, and complete system assemblies positions the company as a key partner in this transition.

By delivering solutions that combine precision control, high reliability, and long operational life, Dynex enables customers to manage and control energy at scale, supporting the next generation of pulsed power applications.
